Our Story

Mein Job/Dein Job - My Job/Your Job

In December 2019, EKA welcomed Bavarian television show Mein Job/Dein Job into the studio. Two of our EKA kiltmakers went over to Bavaria, Germany, to learn the craft of dirndl making; and two dirndl makers came over to Edinburgh to learn kiltmaking right here at EKA!

We thoroughly enjoyed having our guests with us for a week, as they got to grips with all things kilt! From pleating and hand sewing to travelling down to the mill, Lochcarron of Scotland, to learn more about tartan. Equally, our kiltmakers have to get to grips with lots of machine sewing and switch from working in menswear to traditional ladieswear. A fantastic week was had by all, making a great show in the process, and we can't wait to see the ladies again!

The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust - 30th Anniversary Magazine

October 2020 saw the release of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust's 30th Anniversary publication, celebrating selected Scholars and Apprentices they have supported. EKA alumni, kiltmaker and, now, EKA tutor Emma is the first and only QEST Scholar for kiltmaking and received a wonderful feature in the magazine. She discussed her time at EKA, her work as a kiltmaker and role within Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers, as well as their shared vision for the future of the Highlandwear industry.

It was privilege to be featured by the foremost organisation upholding excellence in British craftsmanship and supporting people as they work hard to forge heritage craft careers. Emma's funding and the ongoing support she receives from QEST has allowed her to grow very rapidly within the kiltmaking world!

Strictly Come Dancing: JJ Chalmers - Handmade kilt created by EKA Alumni

What an end to a crazy year! Our very own EKA Alumni, Kiltmaker and Tutor Emma created JJ Chalmers handmade kilt on behalf of Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers! Tailored from Lochcarron of Scotland Cameron of Erracht Modern cloth, Emma pleated JJ's kilt to the military stripe - a wee nod to his time in the Royal Marines and as an Invictus Games medallist. As this years representing Scotsman on the celebrity line up, JJ wore his brand new kilt to perform a simply beautiful Viennese Waltz with his professional dance partner Amy Dowden. We were even more excited to receive mentions on BBC Two's Strictly It Takes Two, The Zoe Ball BBC 2 Radio Breakfast Show, The One Show and the cherry on top of the cake, a personalised thank you message from JJ himself!

Emma had to create the kilt in just 14 hours to make sure JJ had a chance to try it on and wear it for a dress rehearsal before Saturday night's prime time big reveal. The outfit also featured hose, a jacobite ghillie shirt, belt and buckle by GNK and a sporran courtesy of our friends at McRostie Sporrans - Team work!

This kilt was the talk of the town, even gaining a feature in the Edinburgh Evening News and The Scotsman - read the article with Emma and Gordon here!

The kilt moved perfectly across the dancefloor thanks to JJ and Amy's beautiful routine and we were inundated with wonderful comments, likes and messages! This is a fine example of what EKA courses can achieve - talented kiltmakers created TV worthy perfection for VIP customers! JJ and Amy got through to the quarter-finals following their kilted performance and we couldn't have been prouder!
